One in three working Americans struggle to meet their basic needs. Despite holding jobs, wages have not kept pace with the rising costs of housing, healthcare, and education. ALICE (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) individuals make up a significant portion of this group. They often work in essential jobs—like cashiers, waiters, and childcare providers—and earn just above the Federal Poverty Level, but not enough to cover basic living expenses. This results in difficult decisions each day—whether to pay for food or utilities, or whether to sacrifice savings for emergencies, a home, or retirement.
Households of color are disproportionately affected, facing compounded challenges. These families live on the financial edge, and United Way is here to support them.
